After serving the Liberty community for over 40 years, the beloved drive-through post office box has been removed. According to the local office, this decision was an order from the U.S. Postal Service’s corporate headquarters. The change appears part of a broader trend in postal service adjustments, prioritizing efficiency over long-standing community services.

(APR 23) UPDATE: SIGN THE POST OFFICE PETITION TODAY! The Union County Development Corporation has organized a petition for Liberty residents who are in favor of reinstating the drive-thru mailbox next to the post office. The goal is to garner over a thousand signatures and present them to the district managers referenced by Postmaster Jacque. Sign this petition to reinstate the mailbox today, visit www.change.org/libertymailbox – You can also check the progress of the petition using this link.

“I fought to keep the alley mailbox,” stated Postmaster Jacque Hahn-Weisz this morning in an interview. According to her, she was informed by email from the “higher-ups” who oversee the district that our mailbox would be removed posthaste. Within two weeks, workers came and removed it.

Hahn-Weisz empathized with the inconvenience and apologized for any hardships faced by the handicapped or elderly. Upon receiving the email, she provided proof to her superiors that the box was well-used—if not the most-used box in town—compared to other boxes that sometimes receive only one envelope a week yet remain active.

According to Hahn-Weisz, another way to address this issue is to call the USPS hotline at 1-800-275-8777. Instructions: First, you will hear a series of options; just say “Mail Pick Up” and then provide the zip code “47353.” After that, you will receive a text message with a link. This is how disagreements are formally logged with the US Postal Service.

(APR 25) UPDATE: USPS Statement Contradicts Liberty Postmaster: Vicky Bostick Logue took the initiative to contact the USPS hotline about the drive-thru mailbox in Liberty that was removed earlier this week. After navigating the automated service, she received a text with a link for further correspondence and was contacted by phone and email yesterday- albeit, only three sentences.

According to US Postal Service Consumer Affairs Representative Teona Ramsey, “a collection of mailboxes are currently being replaced throughout the state.” This contradicts Postmaster Jaquee’s statement. The term “replaced” can be interpreted that the mailbox is under maintenance or that it will be replaced with a new one- even though no timeline for service was given. This ambiguity could also be interpreted as corporate jargon that is intentionally vague and potentially misleading. Given Postmaster Jaquee’s direct comments about the removal and her attempts to retain the mailbox, the USPS response raises concerns that need clarification.

This email was signed by Teona Ramsey / Consumer Affairs.

Vicky kindly shared the email she received, which includes the direct line for USPS consumer affairs. Today, UC-Connect will reach out to Postmaster Jaquee again, as well as call Teona Ramsey, to seek clearer answers regarding the mailbox’s future.

(APR 26 UPDATE) Liberty Postmaster Jacque Hahn-Weisz has discredited the information given to Logue by stating, “The mailbox in the alley is gone for good… Across the state, post office buildings are downsizing to just one front mailbox, including Liberty, Brookville, Connersville, and Richmond.” Despite this miscommunication, Liberty citizens remain resolute, and their determination has spurred a petition for the mailbox’s reinstatement. At the time of publication, the petition sits at 383 signatures.

When asked if residents should continue signing the petition, Postmaster Hahn-Weiz enthusiastically replied, “Yes!” She continued, “I suggest you keep collecting signatures. I’ve sent the petition to my boss to show him what’s happening in town. I haven’t heard back yet, but they definitely know there is a petition circulating in Liberty.”

Meanwhile, district reps for the US Postal Service have provided mixed messages, insisting the mailbox will be “replaced.” After speaking with a consumer affairs associate, Teona Ramsey, it became clear that she misunderstood which mailbox Logue and others were referencing, mistakenly focusing on the box in front of the courthouse, never mentioning the alley mailbox in any of her communication.

Postmaster Hahn-Weiz was also asked, “Does Teona Ramsey, or anyone in consumer affairs, officially work for the USPS?” After a contemplative pause, she did not say a word. Jacque just gave a nervous grin and shook her head seemingly in disagreement.

According to Ramsey, the mailbox in front of the post office will be replaced soon with a more modern version, featuring advanced theft protection and a built-in scanning system that can be accessed remotely by postal workers.

Overall, this situation highlights a disconnect between the local post office and district leaders, yet Liberty’s community spirit remains strong. Their ongoing petition reflects a unified effort to preserve essential services.

Recap. Earlier this week, the only drive-thru mailbox in Liberty was abruptly removed, leaving a significant gap in convenience for residents. Since then, the town has rallied together to form a petition for its reinstatement. Petition Link: http://change.org/libertymailbox.
